Resources For Web Site Evaluations
Below you'll find details on how we put together our web site evaluation reports. We spend anywhere from 15 minutes to half an hour on each report because we believe it's a good investment in getting to know you and gaining your trust as an information and web site maintenance resource. Thanks for the opportunity!
- HTML Validation Errors - The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C)
sets the standards for the language of web documents - HTML, XML, etc.
We use their online
HTML validation checker to see if your page has errors.
- Javascript Errors - For this section, we open your web page
in three different browsers
(Opera,
Firefox
and Internet Explorer [sorry, no link for IE, we don't think people
should use it]). These browsers have error display features, which is handy
because different browsers can have different errors on the same page!
- Broken Links - W3C has an online program which will
check each
hyperlink on a web page to see if it leads to a working web site.
This is important because you want to give visitors the content they
requested, not some broken, outdated mess. Check your links early
and often!
- Spelling -
TextTrust.com
is a great service to detect spelling errors on your web site. You can get
a one-time report or a subscription for weekly spell checking reports.
- Unprotected Email Addresses - This tool is provided by the
fine folks at
WillMaster
cgi scripts. It knows some of the tricks spammers use to
harvest your email address.
- Meta Tag Content - We wrote our own little PHP program to check
the meta tags. If you're using WordPress, you can get a
plugin to
automatically create meta tags for your blog entries. Also, here's a
page detailing
other ways to
add meta tags to WordPress.
- Web Page Size -
WebPageAnalyzer.com
provides a nifty page which fetches your web page and calculates its
size and download speed.
If you have suggestions for other information we could provide, please share your ideas - we're happy to try and supply the info you need.
