Answers
What does your company do?
We specialize in web site maintenance. This includes tasks
such as:
- Making changes your content - When you need some words changed, removed or added, or a page inserted or deleted, we can help. We prefer working with Unix web hosts but can do some things on a web site which uses Windows. We have experience with HTML, CSS, PHP & cgi scripting, and content management systems, so chances are good we'll be able to work on your site.
- Software installation - Many useful programs exist to make your web site more exciting and interactive. and a lot of them are free! Some recent programs we've installed include blogs, a mailing list manager, random quotes, calendar, protected member area, and form processing.
- Advice and referrals - For areas outside of our expertise, we may have a recommendation. If not, we can help you evaluate available resources.
How much do you charge?
Our rate is $75 per hour, and we bill in one-minute increments.
We like to be precise!
What is your billing process?
Normally, we bill on or near the first of the month for all
work completed in the previous month. We accept checks (preferred),
money orders and credit cards for payment. Payment is due upon
receipt and invoices must be paid within 30 days to avoid late
charges. We do NOT accept PayPal
for payment of invoices.
How long does it take to get work done?
The answer to this one depends on lots of things. So we may
accomodate all of our client requests, let us know your
urgency or perhaps suggest a deadline date, if you have one in mind.
Of course, when things are broken, that's always a top priority
but if you don't need it by tomorrow, let us know.
Also please realize our type of business receives many high-priority
requests so some scheduled work may get shuffled to a later time
slot.
How do I know I can trust you?
We've been in business since 1994 and have many satisfied clients.
We're happy to provide references, if you like. Also, you can look
at our personal pages (Emily & Travis), and Emily's
LinkedIn profile.
Our site has been checked by McAfee Site Advisor, too.
What should I do with my backup files?
Save the email attachment on your computer, then make a copy to
keep in a safe place. You may want to burn it to CD and then put
it in a fire or safe deposit box. To be extra safe, keep a copy
of your backup somewhere off the premises.
What if I need to restore my web site?
You can contact us or
your favorite web professional. Your backup contains all of the
files needed to restore your web site. It also contains a README
file with instructions on what to do with the files in the archive.
Can I get just one file out of my backup?
Sure! Open the archive in your favorite archive program and extract
the file you need.
Is a subscription required?
No - it's optional. You'll still get your backups on schedule, but
you won't get our newsletter, free updates to your backup schedule
or software upgrades. You can change your own backup schedule if
you know how to use SSH and cron. Pretty soon we'll post instructions
for do-it-yourselfers.
How do I cancel my subscription?
Please contact us to
cancel, and be sure to let us know if we should turn off the backup
software on your site. If you have any time remaining, we'll gladly
refund the remaining subscription amount.
Web Site Backup - New User's Guide
You've made an excellent decision to protect your web site - thank you!
What To Expect
Your web site now has a program which periodically creates a file containing a complete copy of your web site. When your backup is created, you get a notification email that will either have your backup file attached (If your file is small enough to be delivered by email), or a note letting you know your file is ready for download via FTP. The email will come from your default email address, so please be sure your backup notifications don't get blocked or marked as spam. Your default email address combines your web hosting account name and server name (e.g. our default address is cleanup(a)mule.he.net, because our account name is cleanup and we're on the server mule.he.net). Please let us know if you have any problems receiving your notifications or backup files.
What To Do With Your Backup Files
Save the file attachment somewhere on your computer, then put it on your backup media (CD, DVD, tape, etc). You may also want to keep a copy somewhere off your premises, just to be sure you'll always have a safe copy. When you get a new backup file, you can discard or retain your previous backup file - the choice is yours!
If you don't have a computer backup system, you really should consider getting one. A wise man (Peter Norton) once said, "There are two kinds of computer users... those who have experienced a hard drive failure, and those who will experience a hard drive failure." Getting a backup of your web site is a great first step - complete the process by implementing a backup system for your computer. Don't wait for disaster to strike!
Changing Your Backup Settings
If you want to change your settings, such as the notification email address or backup schedule, simply let us know how we can help.
